The Pawhold Escape Proof Cat Harness is built for the cat that backs out of ordinary harnesses. It slips over the head, closes with two side buckles behind the front legs, and adjusts at four points: two sliders on the neck and two on the chest. That lets you close the two gaps a reversing cat uses, at the neck and behind the shoulders.

A padded mesh plate sits on the chest and a second panel on the back, with reflective piping along both. There is a ring on the back for the lead and a second ring on the chest plate. A matching 4 ft (120 cm) leash comes in the pack.

Four sizes, S to XL, in teal, gray, black and pink. It runs small: measure the chest just behind the front legs, and if your cat is between two sizes or right at the top of a range, take the larger one.

Clip the lead to the ring on the back of the harness, never to a cat collar, which is designed to come apart under pressure. For more room to explore, our longer cat leash is a separate item, and putting both in the same cart applies the pair discount automatically.

Why most cat harnesses fail

Most cat harnesses are not designed for how cats actually move.

Cats have narrow shoulders, flexible spines, and a natural instinct to back out when they feel pressure. When a cat pulls backwards, a harness that cannot be tightened at both the neck and the chest opens up at one of them, creating just enough space to slip out.

That is why so many cat owners experience the same problem. The harness seems secure indoors, but the moment the cat panics, crouches, or reverses, they escape.

If your cat has ever backed out of a harness, twisted free, or slipped out in seconds, the problem is usually not your cat. It is the fit.

Escape artist cats need a harness that closes at the neck and at the chest.

How Pawhold holds when a cat backs up

A cat backs out through one of two gaps: the neck opening, or the space behind the front legs. This escape proof cat harness lets you close both.

It slips over the head, and the chest strap passes behind the front legs and clips shut with two side buckles. Two sliders set the neck opening and two set the chest strap, so each can be tightened on its own until two fingers fit flat underneath and no more.

A padded mesh plate spreads the pull across the chest instead of the throat, and a short elastic section in the chest strap gives a little when your cat stretches or jumps.

No harness can promise 100 percent for every cat. Fit decides it: measure first, set all four sliders, and check them again after the first few outings.

Four adjustment points: two on the neck, two on the chest

Comfort + Safety

Gentle on the neck. Secure on the body.

The lead clips to the ring on the back, so a pull lands on the chest plate rather than on the throat.

  • No pull on the throatThe lead goes on the back ring and the padded plate takes the load across the chest.
  • Breathable meshOpen mesh on the chest plate and on the back panel, padded at the edges.
  • A little giveA short elastic section in the chest strap moves with your cat instead of digging in.
  • Adjusts to your catTwo sliders on the neck and two on the chest for a snug, escape-resistant fit.

What is on the harness

Every part you can see in the photos, and what it is for.

Two side buckles

The chest strap clips shut on both sides, so you can open whichever side your cat tolerates best.

Back ring and front ring

Clip the lead to the ring on the back for walks. A second ring sits on the chest plate.

Reflective piping

A grey reflective line runs along the chest plate and the back panel, for dusk and early mornings.

4 ft leash included

A matching 4 ft (120 cm) leash with a snap hook comes in the pack.

Size + Fit

Choose the right size in seconds

Measure the chest just behind the front legs, then the neck, and pick the size both fall into. It runs small: between two sizes, or right at the top of a range, take the larger one.

Fit tip

A correct fit is snug but comfortable: you should be able to slide two fingers flat under the straps, and no more.

Seems good quality, but sadly was too small for 6-6.5kg cat would say M is until 5.5kg and get L otherwise.

Good-quality leash with a chest harness. Sturdy fabric, sits fairly loosely and does not restrict movement. I am happy with the purchase. The main thing is that the cat is comfortable.

Is this harness really escape proof for cats?
No harness can promise 100 percent for every cat. This one closes the two gaps a reversing cat uses: two sliders tighten the neck opening and two tighten the chest strap behind the front legs. Proper sizing and correct adjustment matter a lot.
How tight should it be?
Snug but comfortable. You should be able to slide two fingers flat under the straps and no more. If the harness shifts forward toward the neck when your cat backs up, tighten the chest sliders a little and check again.
My cat is between sizes. Which should I choose?
Choose the larger size, then adjust down. This harness runs small, so do the same when your cat’s chest is right at the top of a range.
Does it come with a leash?
Yes. A matching 4 ft (120 cm) leash with a snap hook is in the pack. Clip it to the ring on the back of the harness.
Is it safe for kittens?
Only once the kitten is big enough. The smallest size, S, starts at a chest of 11.8 in (30 cm) and a neck of 8.7 in (22 cm). Below that the harness cannot be tightened enough, so wait, and keep the first sessions indoors and supervised.
Does it work for daily wear?
Many cats can wear it comfortably for outings, but we recommend removing it indoors when not needed and always supervising during outdoor time.
What exactly is in the pack?
The harness in the size and colour you chose, and its matching 4 ft leash. The harness carries the maker’s small paw patch on the chest plate, as shown in the photos.

The 4 ft leash is in the pack. A longer one is optional.

The leash that comes with the harness is 4 ft, which is right for a hallway, a balcony or a first outing. Our 10 ft cat leash gives your cat slack to stop and read a smell without towing you down the path. It clips to the ring on the back of this harness. Add both to the cart and the pair is $61.90 instead of $66.80, applied automatically at checkout.
